Strachan looks for Boro back-up at left back

GORDON Strachan will not pursue either of the triallist left backs he fielded at Sachsen Leipzig last night.

However, his decision to take a look at the two players suggests the manager feels it’s a position he needs to strengthen.

The Boro boss handed Italian Mirko Pieri the chance to impress in the first half and then French-Senegalese Jackson Mendy was given the jersey for the second 45 minutes of a 2-0 win.

It was a cameo opportunity for both players to show what they could do, but neither player shone.

Strachan, pictured, told the Evening Gazette: “It was a chance for us to look at both players, who had been recommended to us.

“But I don’t think we will be taking either of them any further.”

Pieri, from Livorno, has plenty of experience from playing in Italy but saw little of the ball in the opening half.

Mendy, from SC Freiburg, did have one opportunity to cover himself with glory when he supported an attack and broke through in front of goal, but he tamely fired straight at the keeper. Pieri had linked up with Boro in England and flew out with the squad, while Mendy met up with them in Berlin.

The fact that Strachan tested two new men in the left back role is a clear indication that he feels he needs strength in depth in the role.

His situation is exacerbated by the fact that Andrew Taylor is not taking any part in the German tour as a result of a stomach strain.

Joe Bennett and Jonathan Grounds were both unused subs last night.

Boro look to have come through the game without any significant bumps and bruises.

Leroy Lita and Nicky Bailey helped Middlesbrough to a comfortable two-goal victory at Sachsen Leipzig in the opening game of their short German tour.

Boro went ahead just after the half-hour when Lita turned the ball in after returning duo David Wheater and Barry Robson had combined.

Recent signing Bailey then added a second after taking advantage of a defensive mistake with thirteen minutes remaining.

The visitors included trialist left-back Mirko Pieri from Livorno, whilst another hopeful Jackson Mendi was named amongst their substitutes following his release from Bundesliga club Freiburg.

A huge deluge accompanied by lightening flashes preceded the kick-off, although the action on the pitch was much less dramatic once things actually got underway.

However, Robson did direct a curling free-kick straight at home keeper Daniel Richter on the half-hour before the visitors went ahead sixty seconds later.

Midfielder Robson was again involved when delivering a corner that was helped back across by Wheater for Lita to have the simple task of turning the ball into the corner.

Goalscorer Lita then chipped another decent chance into the welcoming clutches of Richter following good work by Bailey before the break.

Boro centre-back Stephen McManus was soon required to make a crucial covering block as the action resumed before Wheater headed another Robson corner against the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.

But another goal always looked on for the visitors, and it finally arrived when Bailey seized upon a defensive error and easily guided his second goal for the club into an unguarded net.

pieri è all'esordio in serie b,mi pare...quest'anno l'abbiamo valutato per quel che ha fatto..cacare...però,tra A e B c'è un abisso(raimondi miglior centrocampista 2008/09,iori miglior regista e in A col Chievo,non il milan,avrà fatto tre partite...)..secondo me può dar una mano...
